BC Coilovers - Install

46823 Views 152 Replies 27 Participants Last post by  GumbeauxJr
We are waiting on our custom set of BCs to arrive. I bumped up the rates and valving to 6K Fr and 4K Rr. I was thinking about 5K rears but we'll try this first. BC standard rates are 5K/3K. A bit light in the rear.

We are putting on the BCs today - upgraded the valving and spring rates to match our chassis. For now this is just an educated guess. The rebound on the stock shocks is horrific as the car tends to come up way too quickly and bobble in high speed sweepers. I'm hoping with better rebound control it will feel more secure.

These coilovers will be on sale during our black friday sale (starting at midnight).

Stock height, measured to the centerline of the wheel arch is
24 3/4 Front , 24 7/8 Rear

The install was just as easy as the brake install - very straightforward. You'll need a 18mm, 15mm, 10mm sockets and 13mm wrench (angled). It also helps to have an open socket and 6mm hex (see pic) for the sway bar end link. Set aside about an hour and a half or so. You can also use a jack to keep the rear beam in position while you remove the 15mm lower shock bolts. The rest is total cake.

The BCs are slotted in the front so you can get up to -2.8 deg of camber, right out of the box. Camber plates are not provided since no clearance exists on the strut mount by the firewall. I set the alignment for -1.15 when I am in the car. The alignment I posted is unladen, the camber changes with a driver, going positive on the left, negative on the right when he's in the car. I set the toe at 1/8th toe in for more stability. The rear beam is fixed and it actually ok for a beam. I will beam the beam later for more rear camber, probably -1.7 for the track - and change the front camber to -2.5. The more front camber you run, you lose braking force and straighline grip.
The rear toe should probably be around -.2 for 40 numbers total toe in. Front caster is actually pretty bad ass at 3.8 degrees for a FWD.

Performance:

Its wet outside so I cant push it - but the ride and comfort is a huge improvement over stock. No longer does the car exhibit huge rebound forces (jouncing / bobbing up and down) over expansion joints. In stock form it felt like the spring rates were not matched for the slow speed shock settings, with the springs overpowering the valving. The Fiesta would also bite in a corner then lose its set, then bite again (bobbing). From the limited drive with the BCs, the car feels more balanced, no longer overly sprung. It a good increase in comfort with smoother transitions. Much like taking the edge off while gaining confidence in the chassis. There is no increase in bump steer. Weight drops 6.4lbs over the stock suspension.

I sent the shock ride height measurements and spring rates 6k/4K to BC Racing so each set will look and ride just like the prototype set I spec'd out. I set the ride height at a 7/8 drop in the rear, 1" drop in the front. There is plenty of room to slam the car but thats not my style.

As I said, these will be on sale on our site for Black Friday. Or you can grab them from another vendor. Give BC a couple weeks to get these settings in their system if ordering elsewhere. Otherwise your set we ship to you will be spec'd out to our settings. www.2j-racing.com

All in all, an excellent upgrade and I am loving the ride and handling.

We've sold about 70 sets and never had a warranty issue from our customers (FYI)/ BC is 1yr full. Their warranty is listed clearly on their site.
The stock camber is -1.2, and you can get that with BCs, down to -2.8. I dont know anyone in NY to install but its not that hard to put in.
I've had them on the car now for a couple weeks and I couldnt be happier. As mentioned, the oversprung bouncy nature of the ST is all but gone. It feels like an M3 - more composed while still keeping roll and pitch in check. And its dropped approx an inch with my setup. Zero noises, no rattles or squeaks.

We can make these for anyone thats interested. Just let me know
We would need a min of 7 for a group buy.

Street performance, we can do the exact setup I run on mine. Drop up to -2" With excellent balance and ride quality. Big advantage over stock

Street/Strip performance - for those who want more rotation in the back by increasing the valving to match the spring rates.

Autox/Race - 50% Street - We'll go up 70% over street performance with matching valving. Quicker turn in

There is no additional cost for any of the choices above. Its an average of 3 weeks after the buy in to get the sets finished. We've sold now well over 60 sets of BCs without a single warranty issue. Going on 5 years now.

If someone wants to get a list going, that will work. I dont want to break any vendor rules here - how do we correctly setup a group buy?

The install is very straight forward - actually almost too easy. Just remember not to go crazy with the camber. Although the BCs dont have camber plates (no room exists under the strut mount), the upright attachment is slotted and you can get over -2.5. Way too much for the street. Use the settings I posted on the first page and the hints/tips.

Keep in mind the BCs allow for much wider wheels and tires since they dont extend as far outboard as the stock struts/spring perches. So your concern about rubbing wont even be a problem. There is probably enough room to run 17x9s if you wanted. << dont quote me.

Tomorrow I hit the track with these.

Lets start a list - who is in?
Great - I will move this conversation over there
I have changed and been running -2.2 deg on street and having experienced any ill effects (less braking ability, etc)
NICE!!
Stiff is really stiff.. So you can dial it up to 10 clicks on the street. I love how these ride. I'm really happy with the rates I chose!

What are your alignment specs?
Run at least -1.5 camber, 1/8" toe in, and then stiffen the rear to get more front bite
