Hello I just bought a fiST two days ago. It's has 450 miles on it. The engine has a clicking noise that is fairly loud, white smoke out of exhaust and the car back fires when I rev it up to around 3,000 rpm and let off. If someone knows if this is normal or not let me know please. Thank you.

White thick smoke is usually is a big problem, and can be caused the engine burning coolant. Check your coolant reservoirs level, if it's bone dry then its a good sign coolant getting burnt. This can be the result of a serious issue like a blown head gasket, a damaged cylinder head, or a cracked engine block. Would take it to the Ford dealer ASAP. Also check your oil cap if it's a milkish color then the coolant is mixing with oil and can be burnt making white smoke. Plus if it's back firing that's not normal either especially if everything is stock.

Thanks for the reply. The smoke didn't seem to be thick. The backfiring is quiet and is more of a rumbling when I let off throttle.

If the exhaust is white when warming up only and dissipates as it gets warm then it could just be moisture such as from morning dew. Otherwise the white smoke, aka steam, is a problem.

A rumbling noise could be normal. Backfiring would be a definitive popping sound from the exhaust.

Just out of curiosity, what octane are you using?

I doubt there's any problem with 450 miles on it.
I'm going in tomorrow to have front rotors #3 installed on my car with 5400 miles on it. I don't care how many miles are on it - bad is bad! Now whether or not THIS car actually has problems or not is another question...
