Fiesta ST Vs. Lancer Evolution

Hi,

I am considering these two cars heavily. Has anyone been an Evolution owner? I would be buying a new 2014 model. The ST looks to be a great car, but I am unsure if the HP will be an issue, as I am coming from an e36 m3. I have also never owned a FWD car before, so that is a tradeoff.

Thoughts? The Evolution will be discontinued soon, so this may be a now or never type of decision. Looking for input!

Also, has anyone seen a white fiesta with the molton recaro interior? It is buildable on ford's site, but I have yet to see one in my search.

Hi there -- as odd as it may seem, many of us cross-shopped these two cars! I have lots of friends with late-model Evos; I think they're wonderful cars! They drive well, and make great power with relatively little effort. In SOCAL we have way too many of them running around Fast N Furious style. :)

You have to decide what's important in a car. In the spirit of transparency, I switch between three cars and a couple motorcycles -- so I'm not sure I'd have chosen the FiST as an only car; many here have, and it's considered great for commuting. I simply fell in love with driving a super light car. It's funny that we think of 2700/2800 pounds as light, but that's about as light as it gets in today's market with necessary safety equipment, etc. Yes, you really can feel the difference. It's not just power-to-weight, plenty of cars beat our FiST there too. This is the magical combination of light weight and good power.

My lightly tuned car makes me happy. I want a little bit more power, but not a lot. As others have said, it's the wrong car if you want big power. Drive one on a spirited run and you'll see why we're so excited about it.

Before I bought my Tuxedo Black FiST, I wanted white. If it had been a pearl/metallic, I'd have gone that route. I think this particular white is too much like my first generation WRX (and felt a bit like "refrigerator white"). I still like it, but not as much as the hard-to-keep-clean Tuxedo Black! :) Oh yeah, I've never seen the combo you're talking about -- and I doubt you will short of a special order.

This car draws comparisons to the E30 M3. If you squint your brain, you can see it too. Drive one!

Final note on the Evo -- they said last year was the "last year", too. Since the new car platform isn't ready, they'll probably say "one more year!". ;)

What about the ST would deter you from making it your only car? The way my current m3 pulls through the gears is addicting, and finding a car to match its balance is very difficult.
One consideration should be PARTS cost. Have a look at what a wiper arm, an alternator and a starter cost for each car. It's because of that simple comparison that I will never again buy a foreign nameplate.
True. I already have the BMW, so I am all too familiar with that.

Something else with the ST is that right now it feels a tad overpriced. Truecar has a base GTi listed for around ~$19/20k, whereas an ST with recaros is ~22.5/23k. Perhaps waiting a few months for the ST hype to die down will bring the price down a little.

It's interesting. Now that I have one, nothing would keep this car from being a wonderfully practical only car. I just meant that I didn't have that constraint and still picked this for my "small sports car" slot.

I have driven early and late M3s -- the old ones were righteous. Heck, all M3s are great! If you want something that resembles the E30 or E36 in a modern context, this is awfully close -- even as a FWD car! That was my biggest hang up, frankly. With the Cobb tuning it's a thing of beauty. No regrets.

I was lookin at Evo MR as a possibility a while back, checked out Golf R's, Mustang GT's all kinds of other vehicles...

I ended up buying a 2010 Camaro 2SS/RS m6, and then went on to a 2010.5 SVT Raptor with the 6.2L. When I was out car shopping again, I had checked out a lot of more expensive vehicles... Plenty of RWD.. And even the '86...

Ultimately I ended up in the ST.. and I am super happy with my purchase.

Half the power, twice the fun. All I can say.

Test drive one though and see for yourself. You may not feel the same way as a bunch of Fiesta ST owners/future owners/fans.

But yeah if you're on the fence, a test-drive is really your only option!

I would think that waiting for better deals isn't a bad idea if you are not going to take any issue with waiting.

I personally got a pretty good deal as I took advantage of Employee pricing + some other incentives, and a really good deal on my trade in. In the end, they paid me to take the car ! but my OTD was shy of 24k all in if I recall correctly, with Recaro's & Green Envy paint. (Not bad by Canadian standards).

The only advice I can give you Pewwwp is go and test drive one...go test drive a couple from different dealers like I did and make your decision cause noone can do that for you but you. I bought this car for the simple fact that its a tiny car, gokart like with power. To me its like a toy where you can run through the gears, take corners fast and accel in and out of traffic quickly. This little car is no slouch especially on the freeway, it pulls and just wants to keep pulling. I bought this car for the fun factor. Also makes a great track car with great potential.
Its not a perfect car but its just FUN even with its minor flaws which makes me overlook when driving it everyday. The M3 is a bad ass car, It was on my list b4 buying my ST but its expensive to maintain which is the real reason why I didnt.
Go test drive on for a good 20mins and come back and let us know what you think.

I never had an Evolution but I've always liked them. In fact before I bought the FiST I had been looking for a used one. Likely a 2003-2006 model but they were all way over priced for a car that old. I was also considering a 2006-2007 WRX. I had been researching the FiST and after a test drive I was sold. I do already have a much faster car in the garage and a few bikes so this car just seemed to make sense. Somewhat practical as far as mpg while still fun to drive on a daily basis and damn does it handle.

Maybe base golfs at 19-20k but a GTi (the sport version) starts at 25k I think.
MSRP is around 25, but with the new model coming soon I have had dealers sending me offers of 19-20k for a base model GTi. I don't like it much and it isn't a contender for me, but it is pretty interesting to compare it with that and its price.
Being a proud owners of a few nice machines, with one closely resembling the Evo being my 2001 Audi B5 RS4 and the King of the mountain being my 1994 Euro E36 M3, I can say the little new comer is standing tall and proud. Yes the power is inferior to the 420hp wagon and the weight is substantially more than my 1991 Miata. But it is the combination of the low end torque and the nimbleness of the chassis, the torque vectoring that has virtually all but killed any understeering. Or that waggy tail on sudden throttle lifts that puts a smile on my face even though I have been an FR for life (Suzuki Swift Sport was a great little mistake few years ago).

Yes the Evo would in no doubt pull harder and corner faster but having never driven one I am not qualified to make a direct comparison. But I have owned a 2000 GC8 STi RA, an 2006 GDB prior to this RS and suffice to say, these 4WD are a very different experience altogether. They gave me a sense of security and confidence came in abundance no matter what terrain or weather they face. Acceleration and outright pace is unmatched, but I never felt involved. I couldn't tell how far the adhesive limits were at mid corner or when the boost might come (NA rules here but the modern Ecoboost FiST showed very little lag).

Its all about driver involvement, interaction between human/machine/road. The Miata gave me all that but lacks the everyday refinement and practicability, the cocoon like security of a solidly build modern hatchback etc. You wouldn't go wrong in buying either but ask yourself what do you prioritize when behind the wheel?

Sorry for my poor English, its my second language and I am just someone outside of USA who find this the best FiST forum by far.

PS I would never walk away from my M3 for a FiST or any car for that matter.

As for interior look feel and quality fiesta win
I owned a ralliart 2012 and got bored of the sst
I suspect you will go for gsr so no hid no leather no nav... The evo is getting old
Sure the track experience is ine of the best around but i assume its a daily driver... Torque is always late , ride is harsher than the fist trunk space is absent and for god sake why the washer fluid behind the rear seats!

Shes expensive to own tires, brakes, fluids(sst)

I do not regret my swich from my baby evo ti the fist( well the fist could be awd for winter)

Don't sell yourself short, that was very well written. :)

I gave up 100+ hp and rwd going to the FiST. This is a great driving car, but so is the Evo. I drove an Evo IX RS back when they first came out, and it was excellent . Much more lag than I expected, but a great drive. The Evo would be a bit bigger inside, but the running costs will be noticeably higher.

That's pretty accurate. My GF just bought a new base Golf with reasonable options for $21K. Figure more like $30K for the GTi you want.

Also, the Golf R is super nice. It ranks very high up for a great overall car, but is a terrible track car (as in can't do it). The "undefeatable" stability control is also noticeable on the street. That has been true for a long time on this platform. I recall this issue on my R32 (one of the best sounding cars ever).

The point about the interior is a good one. The FiST won't impress you coming from a European car (and especially not an Audi!), but it's nicer than the others in the segment, and better than the Evo. One moto pundit said "it punches above it's weight..." and that really is the statement that seems to best define the appeal of the FiST. Everyone expects great things from an Evo (and the cars that define the segment), but even car enthusiasts are surprised the first time they take the wheel of a FiST.

Don't think the price will come down much below current, especially for a Ford. They are selling lots of cars.

Also I don't believe you can get a new GTI for $19000. Of course with their faulty engine they may be heavily discounting them.
I have a 2011 GTI which cost $29,000 and even though my ST won't be in for another week or two, I am really curious to compare them performance wise.

What I didn't see in these posts is that an ST is a subcompact which your bimmer and Evo are not so the only real decision is do you want that small of a car. My wife asked that question and I told her that it's small and fun like the Scirroco of old and she liked that.....

With a Cobb Stage I map, my seat-of-the-pants says the GTi and the ST are very close. However the sensation of speed is greater in the FiST. This is another way to express the joy in driving the car.

Great point about the size difference! The small size is actually my favorite part. When someone quibbles about "room in the boot", I laugh. I might be able to load the FiST into the cargo hold of my Touareg TDI. ;) I park next to the Golf all the time, and I'd say it's 7/8ths the size of our ST. The Golf is about 300-400 lbs heavier. 3200 pounds really is the new "light car"; you must go to a small convertible or sub-compact to play in this space. :)
