I say free because I built this with stuff I already had in my basement. What you are looking at is the bottom portion of the air filter box sitting upside down on the kitchen table before installation. The 2 and 1/4 inch hose is off a shop vac and at the end acting as a scoop is a portion of a quart plastic oil container. After drilling a 2 inch hole in the bottom of the air filter box I attached the hose using some brackets that came from an old Erector set.
I took it for a test drive but it's hard to tell if there is any extra noise but I haven't had it on the freeway yet. I've also got the K&N air filter so it wasn't totally free. That cost me 37 bucks. This is quite similar to the Mountune CAI but cost about $263 less to make.
I was going to drill holes into the air deflector and mount the scoop to the back of the deflector but chickened out and the scoop hangs just below the deflector in the path of cold air.
What do you guys think? Mountune claims theirs picks up 21% more air and this should do about the same.
