You shouldn't really have to "convince" someone why purchasing the ST was better than X, Y or Z car. Just tell them why you LIKE it (without mentioning any mag comparisons), then leave it at that. If they really are car enthusiasts, they wouldn't judge a car simply by mag comparos. It's all about experience.
My brother also did the "why'd you buy a fiesta?" bit when I got my ST, but it was more because he hadn't heard of it, and I moved from a WRX (one of his much preferred cars) to it. I let him drive the car around and he was pretty much sold. He had the "wow" expression from the moment he shifted into first gear.
