My brief 100-mile review

So, I picked up my Fiesta ST after work last night, and the first word that comes to mind is... WOW. This car is just so friggin' fun! :woot:

Even just leaving the dealership, my pulse was racing a bit, and while we don't have any canyons to carve here on Long Island, taking it through some of the back roads out east had me literally laughing out loud (and even talking to myself in amazement). None of the dealers here had the car on hand when I ordered mine a few months back, so I bought it sight-unseen and hadn't even test driven it. I was wary about how "stiff" the suspension might be, but this doesn't feel harsh at all, and it's so much more controlled than I could have imagined. Sure, the quick rebound rate bumps it a bit on rougher roads, but the car stays right where you point it and is so unbelievably stable. Coming from a '99 Chevy Prizm that's served me faithfully for the past 13 years, this Fiesta simply blows me away with its steering response and cornering. It's just made to go fast, but keeps you planted and in control the whole time and even had me second-guessing the speedometer because inside the cabin, I felt like I was just casually cruising along. It's utterly sublime.

I didn't push the car too hard yet, but even at RPMs under 4k, this car can pull. Damn! It was too much fun being on the open road by myself, letting the car coast down a bit, and then giving it a downshift and some gas. Rinse and repeat, do the same in some corners, and you start to get cramps in your cheeks from smiling too hard. I can't wait to see what it's like to venture near the redline once it's broken in.

I'm well aware that part of this euphoria might be due to the novelty of "newness", so feel free to take my first impressions with a grain of salt. Personally though, I've been extremely excited about this car, because on paper, it was the perfect blend of what I've been wanting in a car. I've devoured so many reviews and watched every video review I could find countless time over, and now that I have one of my own sitting in the driveway, I'm ecstatic, because it lives up to the hype. It's an affordable, economical performance car that inspires so much driver confidence, and the fun factor is through the roof. Granted, I've only owned it for half a day, but so far, I'm not impressed... I'm amazed.

In his CarBuyer video review, Mat Watson said, "The Ford Fiesta ST is the kind of car that you take for a drive just for the sheer hell of it, even if you've got nowhere to go." I'm about to heed those wise words on this sunny Saturday morning and see what the next 100 miles bring.
