Has anyone else popped the hood open while the car is running and thought it's excessively loud? Clicking and clacking? It reminds me of sticky lifters on my 64 Ford Fairlane-ha!

Direct injection does sound a lot like diesel! It's nearly as loud as my VW Touareg TDI! It's the sound of technology, we gotta get used to it!

Our CX-5 makes a similar faint, cricket-like high-pitched sound under mild acceleration. The engine noise drowns it out in most situations.

Yes, true -- it's the complete fuel system. All makes and models with DI have this fun new sound. I actually like it; it sounded like loose valves on my first DI car, but after a couple (and TDI) you just resign yourself to the new sound of technology. Now I hear it on other cars and nod approvingly.

Even the new non di engines are loud. The fuel system just ticks away and it sounds almost like a nock.

The TIVCT is fairly noisy too.
