This would literally be my one and only chance to go, so it's hard not to consider it...
I live on the east coast, so I'd have to fly (which I've never done before), and that can get expensive. I've managed to scrape enough money together for 2 round-trip tickets and a hotel room for my girlfriend and I, but she wouldn't be able to attend the event with me..
Then there's the fact that we'd both have to miss classes (we're college kids), take off work (if I'm even able to...), and find some way of getting around in Utah.

So, is the $800, skipping classes, having no airport experience, missing work, not having a reliable way of getting around there, and lack of sleep and/or jet lag worth it?? Man I'd love to have that badge for my Fiesta, learn the skills, and get the swag... but am I crazy for wanting to go?

IMO, considering your situation it's not worth it to just go for just Octane Academy. If you make it a trip an adventure with other things to do in Utah other than OA, then it may be worth it. Also, not worth what their asking to for you to pay to have your girl friend attend OA. She'll be bored. They only thing she'll be able to participate in is lunch and the track ride along. Otherwise she'll just be tagging along with the group. Black badges show up on ebay. Not crazy for wanting to go.

I appreciate the thought! Honestly I'm more concerned about my girlfriend having to stay behind at the hotel since I can't afford to bring her along to the track. She mainly wanted to be with me for the trip aspect, but still, knowing my guilty conscience I'd feel awful for leaving her at the hotel all day during the event...
And that was my thought on the badge too, I'm sure I'll be able to find one to buy at some point. One other thing is if what they "teach" actually sticks. I mean one day of hard driving probably isn't going to do much good 8 months down the road if all the memory of it doing fades away.

the track stuff you learn there is similar to what you'd learn at other tracks. depending on where your hotel would be your girlfriend could explore. When I went I stayed in Salt Lake City, so there would be things to do and explored the area. If your hotel is by the track there's very little to explore and for miles. She could drop you off at the track on venture off with the rental if she wanted to.

Yeah... as is it stands I probably shouldn't go. Although I'm sure she'd be able to find something to do around town there, it probably isn't the best idea to uproot so many things to go. As fun as it would be that money could be useful for a lot of things realistically. I lucked out being able to have this car being just 20 (with a bit of help from the folks of course), so I guess need to repay that luck a bit and let this one pass.

I took my girl with me and paid to have her there. It says in the literature that you "guest" has to be able to drive a stick shift car in order to eligible, but the only thing she got to do was BE DRIVEN by the instructors. Not worth the money to take a guest to the track. That said, in your financial situation, PASS. You can't afford it, good as it is.

I had the same feelings.. Having the youth is both a blessing and a curse because I can probably go to events like this, but realistically I can't afford them; heck my dad and I struggle to afford the car itself certain months.
I was ready to shove everyrhing aside to get to this thing since I have a few months left before I hit the real life responsibility phase, but I had to take a step back and look at the big picture.
I actually put in my cancellation today so passing on it is a done deal, but hopefully I'll get another chance at something similar down the road!
