I have a Zune HD going through the USB port and I thought it would be the perfect match. However, every time i would start the car SYNC would have to Index the Zune and I would usually be at work by the time it would finish. Finally took the time to try to fix it and now everything works flawlessly and the voice commands are great. I pulled the #10 Fuse (SYNC fuse) from the passenger fuse compartment to reset it and at the first startup it indexed and built commands in just a few seconds.

The old iPhone I leave plugged in for music takes a few minutes to index every time I start the car. Maybe five minutes?

You'd think it could store the index locally.
Hi kvetcha,

I recommend performing a soft reset to your iPhone. Unplug it and hold the POWER and HOME keys until the Apple logo appears. Check the compatibility of your phone here: http://support.ford.com/sync-technology/device-compatibility-sync If it's listed as a device that can connect via USB, it should only index one time unless new music has been added.

Greaaaatttt :/ Back to listening to the Radio instead of my music because SYNC wants to index the device constantly. I hope that pulling the fuse isn't going to have to be a recurring thing....

Hi LotusZX3,

Powering down your device and turning it back on may help resolve this indexing concern. Give it a try, then reconnect the USB cable.

Although your device can play music via USB, it may not be fully compatible since it's constantly indexing. The device should only index the first time you connect it after adding new music. To see which devices work well with a USB connection, check the box that says CONNECTS VIA USB on this page: http://support.ford.com/sync-technology/device-compatibility-sync-myford-touch

FWIW I'm using a 32GB Sandisk Cruzer Fit (storing CD's ripped to 256K MP3's)
and long index time has not been a problem so far though it is not full yet....the tiny size works well as it much less likely to get damaged in the console....if I was listening to music on it the last time I drove it starts up immediately when the car does. They are available up to 64GB and since we have two USB ports you could store a LOT of music.

After shutting it down and restarting it there is less load time. I actually got to hear some music on the way to work this morning. Thanks.

I don't see how a Zune HD wouldn't be compatible being the top Microsoft music device.

If the Zune seems to be working correctly now, there's a chance it just hasn't been tested and added to that compatibility chart yet. The list just shows devices that have been verified as being compatible.

I recommend restarting your Zune once a month to make sure constant indexing doesn't become an issue again.

I'm having the same issue with my Zune. Every time I start my car it takes at least 5 minutes to index. Sometimes it takes 30 minutes or more. Powering off the device does not help and resetting the fuse does not help. The device is on the exact version listed in your compatibility guide.

I'm using the 64gb version of that same sandisk drive, only $25 at best buy. I've got about 50gb on it, I've never seen it index yet.

I still have issues on occasion and its annoying. For me the car outweighs the crappiness of the SYNC system though. I doubt they will do anything to remedy it since the zune product line is now extinct.

When that $25 device is capable of playing the Xbox Music DRM protected content I will then consider it a viable alternative.
Ahhh, bummer, (yeah, i never jumped on the DRM bandwagon, always wanted to actually own my music, Amazon, Google play, etc) Be a trailblazer - Put your Xbox in your fiesta and use the line input ;)
