The first tank of gas:

On my "test drive" (I had already bought the car), the salesman and I stopped at a gas station to fill up the gas tank and I had to stop him from filling it with 87 octane regular.

He mentioned that the car will run on 87 but I mentioned the part about it losing 20 HP when you do that.

I convinced him to fill it with 91 but now that I think about it, I should not have had to.

With a car that has a small a gas tank, the difference between regular and premium is three or four bucks and its a performance car, it doesn't need to get hobbled by cheap gas right out of the gate.

If anyone from Ford or a Ford dealership is reading this, get the new Ecoboost cars filled with premium so the first tank is a good one. If your customers want to cheap out later, that's up to them.

As for mine, I'm going to keep it filled with 91 unless I can find better (I tried 5 gallons of Sunoco 96 at the race track).

Mine was filled before I got it.
My dealer has their own pump and yes it is only 87 octane.
I waited until the fuel light came on today to fill it up.
It will never see anything less than 91 from now on.

My dealer had also filled mine with 89. I was pleasantly surprised with the improved acceleration after I put 93 in her!

Not sure what the dealer used, but my first fill-up was 93.
My dealer filled mine with "premium" when I picked it up. Who knows what rating it had and what was already in the tank. I plan on running it mostly empty and filling it with 93 as soon as I find a station that sells it nearby.
Same deal for me, the salesperson told me she filled it up when I picked the car up and when I asked her said she bought regular and did not know that super is best for ST's....but that tank is history and I'll only use premium in the future and it is only $0.20 more per gallon where I live or about $2 more for a full tank
I think mine was regular on the first tank, too. I've noticed a distinct increase in power since refilling with 91. It accelerates so hard in 2nd that directional stability starts getting iffy. :) Second is my favorite gear for demonstration rides for friends. They walk away very impressed.

100% agree. I'm trying to figure out if in first the torque vectoring somewhat limits it's acceleration trying to control potential slip, FiST's I don't think limit the power in first...

The ST isn't limiting power in 1st gear. Oil temp does limit RPM until it warms up.

It is best to assume the dealer will fill the car with regular and it will take about 100 miles or so before the computer fully recomputes to run a higher octane fuel. I have heard of Focus ST guys getting better MPG with premium, but I have not confirmed that. I mentioned to my wife that we should try in her Escape, but she did not like the idea. I have been running 93 octane only in the ST.
