Check this out. Basically a mechanical engineering student at UT Austin did a real science test to see if they helped and the data is statistically significant on a low-load diesel engine so at higher loads and higher temperatures the benefits should increase even more greatly.

Interesting data. I wonder if the extra heat not dissipated by the turbo would lower the life, since you are also increasing the temperature of the turbo (bearing life, etc).

At the bottom of this page, a guy holds his hand on the turbo blanket which is on the exhaust side of a turbo during a 350 horsepower dyno pull. That is incredible.

I would assume that there would be some drop in the life of the turbo. However, I am also sure that it could probably be mitigated with a good oil cooler to dissipate the extra heat put into the oil. I would presume that the materials themselves would not have a noticeable reduction in life unless there was a manufacturing defect that otherwise would not have been a problem.
