i was trying to resolve a clickity-click sound on my clutch pedal when i discovered two white plastic bits...

both get pushed in when the clutch pedal is pressed. I thought the bottom one would be a switch to start the engine but I pressed it by hand (without pressing the clutch) and it only turned on Accessory mode when hitting the Start button

what are these and what do they do?

I've not crawled around on the floor yet, but I would guess its the hill-holder clutch actuator.

My '84 Subaru Brat had a hill-holder cluctch, then never saw another from any manufacturer until my FiST. Not that I need it, been driving manuals for 40 years now. But makes it easier for sure, especially getting out of the parking garage at work.

that seems to be the most plausible answer I've gotten so far...thanks a bunch!

I've switched off the hill hold assist since day one, found it to be a tad bit annoying on a manual.

The switch is the clutch pedal position switch, it's primary function is to allow you to start the car. The longer one is the actuator rod for the clutch master cylinder.
